THE GRAND RELICS

The Bureau of Balance is dedicated to obtaining and destroying the Grand Relics, whose terrifying power and irresistible thrall have taken the lives of thousands, if not millions, across the globe. After the cataclysmic events known as the Relic Wars, The Director of the Bureau took steps to ensure history would not repeat itself - by purging the knowledge of their existence to all people outside of the organization, the Bureau could more easily act upon the knowledge and whereabouts of the Relics as they were discovered, and prevent the general populace from getting in harm's way. Below is a catalogue of the Grand Relics, each representing one of the seven schools of magic, along with their status and any other pertinent information known to the Bureau.

The Phoenixflame Gauntlet.jpg

The Phoenixflame gauntlet

Grand Relic of Evocation

Status: Destroyed

Location: N/A

Abilities: Conjures a seemingly endless torrent of fire

History: Perhaps the most prolific of the Grand Relics, the Phoenixflame Gauntlet can be directly blamed for the destruction of a dozen cities and at least one hundred thousand deaths. The hellfire that spews from the Gauntlet's fingertips can be conjured without prior magical knowledge, and the relic is reported to control itself by pumping mystical burning energy directly into its wearer, essentially making them a conduit for it's wanton destruction.

The Amulet of Azkaranth.jpg

The Amulet of Az'Karanth

Grand Relic of Illusion

Status: Destroyed

Location: N/A

Abilities: Imbues illusory objects with energy, giving them physical properties

History: The Amulet of Az'karanth, despite its horrific appearance, has perhaps the most potential for noble use among the Grand Relics - its ability to create food out of thin air for soldiers, healing supplies for the wounded and dying, and buildings to rehouse those who have lost everything. These were a few of the applications the Amulet saw throughout the Relic Wars; but the rest were far more sinister. Illusory armies of dragons, undead, and far more heinous beasts were unleashed upon the world in the name of conquest, but creatures like these tend to retake their free will once their bodies are made manifest.

The Gaia Blade.jpg

The Gaia Blade

Grand Relic of Conjuration

Status: Destroyed

Location: N/A

Abilities: Grants total control over the natural domain, allowing the acceleration of life or death of nearby flora

Information: During the Relic Wars, the Gaia Blade served two purposes - the first, creating a deadly and impassible terrain to wall ground forces out of (or into) an area; and the second, devastating the ecosystem surrounding a fortress or keep, withering the plant life and dooming the nearby inhabitants to starvation. One can only hope that it has been buried deep in a deserted wasteland, since the havoc it can wreak is both immense and immediate.

The Coldfire Crystal.jpg

The ColdFire Crystal

Grand Relic of Transmutation

Status: Active

Location: Unknown

Abilities: Allows the transmutation of matter

History: Not unlike the Philosopher's Stone of folklore, the allure of the Coldfire Crystal is the potent extraplanar energy which it radiates, allowing a clever alchemist to freely create precious metals from rock, wine from water, and perhaps even living flesh from its base components. During the Relic Wars, the Crystal was used to power terrible war machines on their march towards devastation, and Bureau artificers surmise that its incredible power may only limited by the imagination of the tyrant who wields it.

The Epoch Stone

The Epoch Stone

Grand Relic of Divination

Status: Active

Location: Unknown

Abilities: Grants control over the flow of time in a large area

History: The humble appearance of the Epoch Stone prevented many who held it from using it to its full potential; what looks to be a simple obsidian disk with channels carved into its face is, in reality, a powerful tool that grants its wielder command over time itself. While this effect is largely wasted on many of the unimaginative warlords who fought to take it, a few made clever use of it during the Relic Wars; elderly kings regained their youth, year-long fortress sieges were survived with a week's provisions, and legions of men fell to dust as they were crushed by the weight of a thousand years.

The Animus Bell

The Animus Bell

Grand Relic of Necromancy

Status: Active

Location: Known

Abilities: Removes the life force from a sentient creature

History: The horrific toll of the Animus Bell was the last sound heard by countless warriors and tyrants alike during the Relic Wars. It is said that the person who wields the Bell can instantly sever the soul of anyone who has heard its chime, casting it out from its mortal vessel. What happens to the souls after they are taken is unclear, since no living person has seen it in action. This fact alone has left much of the relic's other uses shrouded in mystery; but Bureau artificers and scholars alike agree that it is a force to be reckoned with, and great care must be taken when attempting to reclaim it.
